CONFICKER The Malicious Computer Worm
April 1, 2009

They are still not sure if this is an April Fool's prank or not. But beware, this computer worm is expected to surface today. That is if it is not a prank. You know what they say, "Better Safe Than Sorry".

Conficker - whose name they believe may have come from a Web sites name, prays on the Microsoft Windows operation system. It is believed that versions of the software have been spreading since October. Most of that has been oversees due to unpatched, pirated Windows.

They say this program will not affect Apple or Linux-based computers.

We are being advised to link to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx
to apply the Microsoft Patch and we are also advised to update our antivirus program.

We are also being advised to apply a Microsoft update for the Autorun feature in Windows that was released in February.
That link is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715

Most importantly there is a Conficker removal tool link at

There are three tipoffs that may indicate your computer is already infected:
1. You can not access Microsoft.com
2. You can not access various computer security vendors
3. You can not turn off your computer

If this does happen it is recommended that you power down your machine, disconnect all of your cords/cable cords, and call a computer technician.

Beware of stolen passwords as well. If your computer has become infected you should contact all financial institutions and have passwords and account number changed.

Hopefully for those who have not had the opportunity to receive this information, it will make its way to you so that you do not become a part of this threat.

Wishing everyone well.
