Hernando County (Spring Hill, Brooksville, and Weeki Wachee) grew at a pace that probably was too fast in the past decade. It unfortunately caused us economical problems, such as unemployment which caused foreclosures. Hernando hit a high of new home building in 2005 (as did other places). There were 4,185 permits issued in 2005 and in 2008 declined to only 378. Approximately 6,500 foreclosures were filed in the Hernnado Circuit Court during the last two years. Most of our jobs were construction jobs and when jobs were lost, foreclosures and short sales became the "norm" to real estate sales here.
However, something was saved in Weeki Wachee which we are proud of - our mermaid show. There were alot of ups and downs and who was going to own the park which is on a natural spring. Legal problems were weighing heavily because ownership was changing, and then finally the State took it over and made it a state park. The state is still working up some plans for the park's future. Lawmakers are arguing over dissolving the city of Weeki Wachee, which I personally am against. I love saying I live in Weeki Wachee.
Our growth was largely due to the opening of the Suncoast Parkway in 2001. It made it much easier for people to commute to Tampa.
Hernando County is a wonderful place to live and visit!
We will always keep you posted.
Have a great day and enjoy!
