I saw an old aquaintance yesterday who I know from our children going to the same daycare. I aked him how his kids were doing...when he told me he lost one at age 16. I was taken back as he proceeded with the details. One evening during dinner, the child was looking in another direction when he noticed a lump on her neck. He asked her about the lump and she replied "it's nothing..it doesn't hurt". He then asked if she had any other lumps and she replied "a few on my shoulder..but they don't hurt". He made an appointment with their family doctor and after several tests, found out she had lukemia. Perhaps if the lumps hurt, it would have been caught earlier. Parents, please tell this story to your children and let them know the importance of sharing anything out of the ordinary happening to their body with you. The world is so full of toxins these days we need to pay closer attention to our health. Organic foods are prefferable but expensive. A good family project would be to make a vegetable garden. This will give you a good opportunity to tune into your children.
