Hernando County and the school district are preparing to apply for a grant totalling $315,000 under the Safe Routes to School program for the purpose of building a three-quarter mile stretch of sidewalk along the South side of Powell Road from Spring Park Way to the existing sidewalk in front of Chocachatti Elementary School. This money would also pay for approximately 1600 feet of sidewalk along the West side of California Street from Powell South to the Nature Coast High Entrance.
As part of the grant application, he county and school district will form a Safe Routes committee to identify and prioritize local projects. This group will likely include a countgy engineer and the school transportation director as well as principals, teachers, parents and possibly student.
