Series of cold fronts sweep across Florida
January 4, 2010

Florida State officials in Tallahassee, Leon County are urging residents to prepare for temperatures to drop near or below freezing throughout the week as a number of cold fronts sweep across the state! The last time Florida experienced such a stretch of cold weather was nine years ago, in January 2001, even Key West in Monroe County is feeling temperatures not seen nearly a decade.

Some safety tips for your pets, your plants and you are below:

  • Pets should either be brought inside or should be provided some form of adequate shelter and insulation from the cold weather.
  • By mulching and covering your in-ground plants with some form of material (I use sheets) you can help protect your plants from the freezing winds that normally move in with a cold front. Don't forget to bring all of your potted plants inside during this time.
  • If you are using a space heater to keep your home warm during this time, please use extreme caution! Remember to keep anything flammable at least three feet away from your space heater. Never leave your space heater on when unattended, remember to turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep. Keep your pets and children away from your space heater, one touch of a heating coil can cause a severe burn. Be sure to check your space heater for frayed insulation, broken wires or any other malfunctions before using your space heater. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has a website that can help you with all the safety information that you need to enjoy your space heater safely.

Stay warm and be safe!
