Tubing Down The Rainbow River

We were invited by friends to go tubing down the Rainbow River at Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon which is located in Marion County. From Spring Hill in Hernando County it is a little over an hour's drive North on Hwy 41. I was a little uneasy not knowing what to expect; was there bottoms in the tubes or do your feet dangle in the water, are there alligators along the way but thought I'm going to go ahead and try it! I am so glad I did.
We arrived promptly at 10:00am this morning and there were so many people that had the same idea (I didn't realize this was such a big thing) we did have a long wait in line; about an hour, then the shuttle took us to the water where we put our tubes in. The water was 72 degrees but felt so refreshing. Down the Rainbow River we went, everyone's tube tied to each other so we didn't lose anyone along the way. It takes approx 1 hour 45 minutes and it goes by very fast. We saw many different kinds of birds, fish, turtles, a mother duck & ducklings, but no otters as promised. On one side of the river there were many rustic residential homes to view. It was very enjoyable! After our tubing adventure we drove over to the State Park HeadSprings which has a separate entrance but only a few miles away. This State Park is beautiful! There are walking trails, picnic and pavilion areas, swimming, waterfalls and much more. It is breathtaking-look at the pictures!
If you are looking for a way to spend the day and stay cool...this is a definite thumbs up! The cost for renting an inner tube was just over $10.00 which included the shutttle. You can bring your own tube which will cost you less. For more information on Rainbow River Tubing http://www.floridastateparks.org/rainbowsprings We'll be going back again....
